Hair color: Get funky for a night

sexy red swim suitAbout ten years ago, I got bored with my blonde locks and decided to go red.  I daringly colored it at home and for the first few days the color looked great. Then it started fading quickly with each wash. My elegant red faded to a punk-toned pink and purple. Needless to say, I went to my hair stylist and she dyed my hair another shade of red. I also bought shampoos for red-colored hair to maintain the color as long as possible.  The red looked cool but was unfortunately very high maintenance because I had to color it approximately every 30 days. So I gave up on red and slowly transitioned back to blonde.

I still have moments that I’d like a major color change but I know that the consequences could be painful. Good news for those moments of spontaneity, I recently read about a one night hair highlight product from Alterna that can be found at Sephora. It is a crème-mousse that is designed to bring out vibrant highlights that will wash out with one shampoo. Apparently I wouldn’t be able to use the red on my blonde hair. The manufacturer says that the colors Sweet Caramel and Ravishing Red are best for use on light to dark brown hair and not intended for low lights on blonde hair.  Blondes should use the Platinum or Shimmering blonde colors.

For $29 at Sephora it is a much lower cost alternative to permanent funky highlights that you may regret later.  I’ve learned the hard way and appreciate the temporary color approach.
