This week my husband and I are in Ajaccio, Corsica. My husband was invited here to present his research in computational fluid dynamics and I’m along for the ride. As part of the conference the group was invited by the Mayor to the Ajaccio City Hall. Upon entrance to the hall, uniformed musicians provided a special drum roll greeting as we passed up the elaborate staircase. In the main reception room, portraits were displayed of Napoléon Bonaparte and his family. Corsica makes their own wine and loves dishes with cheese. We received Corsican champagne, small quiches and cheese pastries all signature foods of the island.
After the reception, we visited a local restaurant called La Conga to inquire about salsa dancing. To our surprise, on Friday nights they have a salsa dance night where they move out all the tables from inside the restaurant to make room for dancing. We stayed at the quaint club for a drink and met a group of lovely elementary education students who were eager to learn salsa. One of the girls spoke fluent English and served as our translator for the group. We told the owner if he would play some salsa, we would give them a basic salsa lesson. The owner smiled widely, briskly locked the door, and pumped up the music. Five students enthusiastically lined up for the basic lesson of Los Angeles (LA) style salsa on one. The cook started texting his friends to come to the restaurant on Friday to learn dance from us.
We returned to La Conga on Friday night for their formal Latin Night. The small space quickly filled up with talented local salsa dancers who mainly danced Cuban style. Our LA style was a bit unique and they graciously clapped after we completed our first dance. The crowd was warm and friendly. Despite language barriers everyone was talking and laughing with us and we had a wonderful time.
Salsa Sexy fever has hit Ajaccio, Corsica! We have seven new www.facebook.com/getsalsasexy fans on Facebook and we are so grateful for the kind people we meet all over the world. Dance can truly bring people together and allow one another to connect!
