Summer is here and vacation planning in full swing. However, with high gas prices and a shaky economy, many may be opting to staying home or choose short trips. As a resident of Atlanta, I haven’t even enjoyed some of the activities of this dynamic city. When thinking about a “Staycation” I investigated fun things to do (beyond the events from Salsa Sexy’s events page) in Hotlanta this summer. I found that www.atlanta.net had a wealth of info. Here are my top three picks:
1. Atlanta Contemporary Art Center – Offers free admission every Thursday from 11am to 8pm. The Contemporary exhibits works by local, regional, national, and international artists. Thursday evenings may also offer lectures, gallery tours and film screenings.
2. Centennial Olympic Park - Hosts many exciting free events:
Wednesday Wind Down - Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8 p.m., April-September, with performances varying from jazz to reggae.
Fourth Saturday Family Fun Days - The fourth Saturday of each month, April – September, the park offers a FREE family fun day featuring activities including educational programming, specialty workshops, performances, contests, prizes and more.
Music at Noon - On Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-1 p.m., April-October, features a variety of live music including R&B, jazz and reggae.
Have a lunch picnic with Music at Noon as relaxing tunes float over the city.
3. Castleberry Hill - Experience quaint Castleberry Hill and take in trendy art galleries, restaurants and meeting places.
First Thursdays ArtsWalk
Self-guided tours of Downtown galleries occur the first Thursday of every month throughout the year. View the arts, tour historic districts of Downtown and enjoy discounts at Downtown restaurants.
Atlanta offers many fun cultural activities that you can enjoy while preserving your pocketbook. Also be sure to check out the Salsa Sexy events page for local night life and fitness activities. The Salsa Sexy website regularly features hot events like dance parties, yoga or other fitness activities, many of which are free of charge.
