The best seller list of books for 2012 includes E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey. Some call it a romance novel and others call it pseudo porn. Whichever label you give it, the ladies like it. Sex sells and women prefer it in flavors of romance with some kinky extremes. I must admit I have yet to read the books. However, I am now curious but somewhat unsure that I want to read them since apparently sadomasochism is part of the plot. I don’t particularly enjoy the thought of pain, bondage and domination.
But the surprise is how James’s book involves a succession of overtly kinky sex scenes, including sadomasochism, which has conquered the mainstream publishing market. According to guardian.com, “The feminist writer and academic Marina Warner believes the unexpectedly wide appeal of this explicit fiction could be a sign of how difficult people now find it to feel aroused in an era when sex and nudity have become so commonplace. ‘There has been a general unveiling of the body in our culture and there is a connection between prohibition and arousal,’ she said. ‘It is in some way linked to our feelings about the sacred and the profane. I definitely don’t want to go back to censorship, but I don’t think the answer is to reach for extremes either.’”
Extreme or not, the reality is that no matter how much you love your mate, fantasy is needed to keep the fire alive. Maybe a little mommy porn is the prescription to rev up a tired sexual engine. After all, day after day of Super Mom causes many ladies to forget their primal needs for sex, love and affection; and a little domination may help bring back that loving feeling.
