Happy Hour! Booze Cruise! Cocktails! Alcohol is often a central aspect of social circles and entertainment. Alcohol can cause our inhibitions to go down and become a social crutch making booze a requirement for us to think that we are having fun. However, the next time you think about joining group Happy Hour, you might want to consider the impact those extra drinks have on your waist line.
Alcohol is full of sugar and calories that restrict your metabolic rate. Alcohol is also known to have a dehydrating effect; if you are not fully hydrated your metabolism does not work as effectively. Prevention Magazine said, “Skip the second cocktail. When you have a drink, you burn less fat, and more slowly than usual, because the alcohol is used as fuel instead. Knocking back the equivalent of about two martinis can reduce your body’s fat-burning ability by up to 73%.”
So next time, instead of heading to a bar with your friends, why not try something new like encouraging your friends to experience an evening of dancing? Dancers typically sweat and become thirsty for water more than dehydrating alcoholic beverages. You’ll burn more calories, have tons of fun, get home more safely and avoid the dreaded hang over.
