Statistics show that porn, like it or not, is readily available, highly viewed and of the top online searches. According to Top 10 Reviews, “Pornography consumers access pornography both at work and at home. A total of 40 million U.S. adults regularly visit pornography websites. Ten percent of adults admit to an internet sexual addiction and 20 percent of men say they access pornography at work.” But what about women? Top 10 Reviews provided a breakdown of male/female visitors to pornography sites and although men are the majority at 72%, 28% of females also visit porn sites. And the intranet pages available are staggering – in the U.S. 244,661,900 intranet porn sites exist.
However, when it comes to women and porn, Dutch researchers found that watching erotic movies can deactivate the part of the brain that processes visual stimuli. According to livescience.com, “Most of the time, watching movies or conducting any other visual task sends extra blood flow to this brain region. Not so when the movies are explicit, the researchers found. Instead, the brain seems to shunt blood — and therefore energy — elsewhere, perhaps to regions of the brain responsible for sexual arousal. Turns out, the brain may not need to take in all the visual details of a sex scene, said study researcher Gert Holstege, a uroneurologist at the University of Groningen Medical Center in the Netherlands.”
Unfortunately, pornography often times may cross the line from erotic to abusive and watching can turn off viewers, especially women. The Dutch researcher Holstege said that the research has implications for sexual dysfunction, “as they paint a picture of the brain in which safety is paramount and anxiety is a libido-killer.”
According to livescience.com’s article, “If you want to have sex, as a man, you need to produce a safe situation for the woman,” Holstege said. “That is what you want, that is the most important thing.”
