Can you heal yourself while doing the deed? The basis for reflexology is the theory that reflex points exist on all organs, which correspond to other parts of the body. Mantak Chia and William U. Wei’s book, Sexual Reflexology: Activating the Taoist Points of Love, gives applications of sexual reflex points in lovemaking to practice sex as an act of healing.
The book follows Taoist theory of male and female energy. Male energy is yang and female energy is yin. Taoists found that ying and yang were opposite halves of the universal whole, which need to be in balance to be healthy. When it comes to relationships, Taoists believe that it is necessary to understand and respect the differences in the genders instead of struggling because of expectations that the opposite sex should be the same.
“Sexually, men are like fire, quick to get hot and quick to explode. Women, on the other hand, are like water, heating up slowly and staying hot longer. This is the reason that male Taoists use a variety of techniques to satisfy a woman sexually. Women need foreplay, to be caressed tenderly and embraced with passion. This way the water, the feminine sexual energy, will boil and energy will be exchanged. Thus the Taoist saying ‘Never sail your boat in a rocky river,’ meaning that the woman needs to be aroused and lubricated before sexual intercourse.”
The book further uses the fire and water analogy to describe the emotional tendencies of men and women. When it comes to emotions women are more like fire with greater ease of expressing emotions and feelings; whereas, men are more like water, closing themselves off to internal emotions. The authors use the analogy of the tractor and the lake to explain the differences.
“When you drive a tractor into a lake, you get stuck. And what happens when the tractor tries to fight the lake? It sinks deeper. Who is stronger, the tractor or the lake? Obviously, the lake is stronger. It not only has its own energy but also absorbs all of the energy the tractor exerts. Now, the tractor is active energy and the lake is passive energy. The lake is the yin energy, or the feminine energy, and the tractor is the yang, or the male, energy. So the woman is far superior to the man in every aspect: physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.”
Taoists believe that because women’s sex organs are internal, women tend to internalize and are more connected to heart energy. This allows them to connect psychologically and spiritually at a more healthy level. Whereas, since men’s sex organs are external, men tend to externalize, generalize and face more difficulty expanding beyond the external here and now. Understanding these tendencies can help a person balance their own ying and yang as well as develop a great, balanced partnership.
Taoists also believe that sexual energy is nourishment for the body, mind and spirit based on the concept of Chi that has been in Chinese culture for thousands of years. The word Chi has been translated as energy, air, breath, life force, or vital essence. “It is the life-giving force that creates movement and sustains the universe. Chi is what allows planets, suns, and stars to revolve around each other.”
Taoists find that working with energy is a major factor in our overall state of happiness. “Energy, like water, is the life-giving sustenance of the earth. Where water flows, life flourishes. That same principle is at work in our bodies. If we want a healthy body, energy must circulate to all parts. Without proper energy flow, the body creates tension, sickness, and disease. It is like a stagnant pool or dried up garden.”
Therefore, sexually energy is beyond an act of sex, because it impacts all areas of our lives. “It influences the health and aging of the body by affecting hormonal production. An abundance of sexual energy repairs hormonal disturbances, reduces cholesterol, and decreases blood pressure levels. When sex glands are stimulated, it enhances the hormones secreted by the other major endocrine glands: adrenal, thymus, thyroid, pituitary, and pineal.”
Taoist techniques encourage breathing, massage and sexual positions that can help improve sexual partnership as well as increase the energy flow and health of the individual. Stayed tuned for the follow up article that will outline major love points to enhance your sexual experiences.
